As product development teams are being challenged to do more with less, new Virtual Reality (VR) capabilities have proven to be game-changing. VR accelerates the design and review cycles and cuts costs by reducing the number of physical prototypes needed.
In this post, we will cover some of the functionality the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform is innovating with this technology to enable users to review the 3D product model as a virtual prototype in an immersive way to quickly achieve design corrections and optimization.
Integrated VR Process
In contrast to the traditional approach of using a dedicated visualization tool for immersive visualization, VR is an integrated feature of the render engine on 3DEXPERIENCE. VR commands are available directly within most 3D capable apps. There is no need for data conversion.
You can launch a VR session directly from the design app with just a couple of clicks. High-performance render engine reduces the need to prepare and optimize CAD data for VR usage. The commands of the app being used are available while the user is in the VR environment.
VR integration in design apps allows changes to the design during a review, which reduces lead time for design modifications.
Multi-User Collaboration
Immersive Collaboration Experience allows multiple users to collaborate virtually in the same VR Session from different geographical locations reducing review times for teams that are geographically distributed.

Design Using VR
Natural Sketch capabilities allow designers to 3D sketch and model directly in the 3D VR space to render their ideas more quickly and accelerate the design process.

Team Member Training
Another innovation available in 3DEXPERIENCE is the ability to virtually, and interactively, train team members by leveraging DELMIA Work Instructions while using VR. This allows teams to find process errors and practice the procedure before a part is built.
VR Devices Supported
Supported devices plug-and-play directly with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The only set up needed is the typical device set up from the manufacturer.
Augmented Reality (AR)
Dassault Systèmes’ Augmented Reality (AR) capabilities in 3DEXPERIENCE are currently in the Beta stage and the device coverage is continuously being expanded. In the image below, a 3D model is visualized in the real world using AR.
Currently, AR hardware uses proprietary software which presents challenges for a plug-and-play solution. As AR hardware manufacturers adopt an open standard, the ability to provide more innovations in AR capabilities will increase.
